BILL C-14: NEW
LAW MAKES IT EASIER FOR CHILDREN ADOPTED ABROAD TO BECOME CANADIAN CITIZENS (by
Robin Hilborn, Family Helper)
(January 7, 2008). Canadians who adopt children abroad will find it easier to
have their newest family members become Canadian citizens. Bill C-14, an
amendment to Canada’s Citizenship Act which became law on June 22, 2007,
will go into effect Dec. 23.
NEW
PARTNERSHIP FOR THE ADOPTION COUNCIL OF CANADA
(January 7, 2008). The Adoption Council of Canada (ACC) is proud to announce
that it has received funding from the Government of Canada’s Social Development
Partnerships Program! This project funding will allow the ACC to continue with
its program, Canada’s Waiting Children, and embark on other initiatives.

THE ACC STRONGLY URGES THE ONTARIO GOVERNMENT TO ACT
SWIFTLY TO BRING IN AMENDMENTS TO THE NEW AIDA
(October 1, 2007) The Adoption Council of Canada (ACC) strongly urges the
Ontario government to act swiftly to bring in amendments to the new Adoption
Information Disclosure Act. This Act was struck down as unconstitutional by Mr.
Justice Edward Belobaba on September 19th, 2007.

All members and non-members of the Adoption Council of Canada (ACC) are
invited to attend the 2007 Annual General Meeting. Note that only ACC
members in good standing are eligible to vote. The ACC is proud to welcome
Joe Kroll, as the guest speaker for the event. Joe will
speak about
advocacy, particularly strategies that have been successful in advocating for
improved services. He will use the discriminatory parental leave provisions
for adoptive parents as a key example.

ACC SAYS IT'S "THE RIGHT LAW FOR ONTARIO"
(Sept. 6, 2007) In 2005 the Adoption
Information Disclosure Act became law and was welcomed by many sectors of
the adoption community in Ontario. That law has now been proclaimed and will
come into force on Sept. 17, 2007. As of that date, adult adoptees and birth
parents, whose adoptions were finalized in Ontario, can apply to get
information in adoption orders and original birth records.

CANADA RELEASES STATISTICS FOR 2006
(August 16, 2007)
Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) today released the international
adoption statistics for 2006 to the Adoption Council of Canada. In 2006
Canadians adopted 1,535 children from abroad, compared to 1,871 the year
before. Once again, China stayed by far the number one choice of Canadian
families.

Adoptee Canada invites all Korean-Canadian Adult Adoptees, to Toronto, Friday,
August 24, 2007 - Sunday, August 26, 2007 for a weekend of fun and networking.
We believe this will be the first Gathering of its kind for Korean-Canadian

(Apr. 24, 2007) Birth Mothers' Service is held in recognition of women,

are mothers who are often forgotten on the traditional Mother's Day.
NEW BRUNSWICK TO REFORM ITS ADOPTION LAW
(Apr. 11, 2007) New Brunswick amendments will affect open adoptions, adoptions
by common-law couples and international adoptions.
